L-theanine is also known as gamma-glutamylethylamide, or simply GLA for short. It was first isolated from green tea in 1949 by Japanese scientist Yoshio Osakabe, who called it “gamma-glutamyl ethylamide.” In 1956, the name was changed to L-theanine (pronounced lee-en-AINE), after the Latin word for green tea, Thea Sinensis.<\/p>\n
